Feminism is the recent hot talk in social medias.some criticizers using this as an opportunity to insult the people who talks about women rights .On the other side Some people using this as an opportunity to market themselves as a feminist.
But there lived a legend who made a beautiful ideology of feminism and he was brave enough to practice the real essence of feminism in his life too. He is E V Ramaswamy Alias Periyar. There is no wonder why people addressed him as Periyar. Through out his life he fought against the rituals and traditions which humiliate the freedom of others.
During 20th century Tamilnadu witnessed a non Brahmin Dravidian movement ,the origin of this movement was non Brahmin manifest of 1916. .On 1917 justice party formed to promote political and educational advancement of non Brahmins.However Periyar came up with his own self respect movement in 1925. The ideology of this movement based on NO GOD, NO RELIGION, NO RITUAL, NO CAST. He questioned monogamous family structure and chastity that suppress women with In it.
He questioned holy matrimony tradition and he considered marriage as a contract of two equals.He even advocated that the term husband and and wife are irrelevant and he insisted to use the term companion or partners.
Through speeches and writings, he raged a war against those rituals and tradition which violates women’s freedom and rights.
He stated that man treats woman much worse than how a landlord treats his tenant and how upper class people treats lower class. At the time of marriage people will look for those kind of girls who is obedient and can be a good slave to the boy exactly same manner how we buy a cattle.
At the age of 19 Periyar married Nagammai who was 13 at that time and a led a life of comradeship . He insisted his wife to address him comrade .He took his wife and sister for picket, meeting, conferences etc. He persuaded his wife to discard Thali. He was also attracted by the satyashodhak marriage rites where bride and groom recited gender equal mantras instead of religious mantras.
He wanted women to have full control over sexuality and fertility. He challenged manusmrity ” Pitah Rakshathi KoumarePati Rakshathi YouvannePuthro Rakshathi Vardaykye, Na sthree swathanthram arhati”. He challenged old religious theories which increases the depth of gender in equality. He was always against the glorifying factor associated with a women’s sacrifices for her husband, he considered it as stupidity.
He told that women would never free as long as patriarchal majority enjoying the current state.
Parents should treat their girl child as the same way they treat their boys.( This is the reason why a piece of fish fry can create a great difference among the freedom of a girl and boy)
After the death of his wife he married Maniammai (his loyal secretary for 6 year) who is around 40 years younger than him. In a statement he explained that he married not for sexual pleasure but to continue his legacy.
Through out his life he fought for a cause. And he well practiced his ideology .His political stands, his ideology of feminism , his simplicity made him Periyar-A true legend. Before you criticizing feminism , go through his life, learn from him. He practiced and propagated feminism with all its purity.
Walmart is a familiar name to us even though it doesn’t have any shops in India. Sam’s club is a membership only retail warehouse clubs owned and managed by Walmart.
